Ayurveda – What are the Doshas? Vata, Pitta & Kapha….

VATA, PITTA & KAPHA…..⠀ The qualities of the three doshas and how they function in our being.⠀ *⠀ Vata dosha is formed with the elements air and space. Vata governs all movement. The qualities of Vata are light, dry. airy, quick, and cold. Vata people are very tall or little. They are thin and either tall or short. They have asymmetrical features. When Vata people are in balance, they are creative and easily adaptable. They have a great way with words. When Vata people are out of balance, this leads to fear and anxiety.⠀ *⠀ Pitta, heat, is made up of the elements fire and water. Pitta governs digestion, nutrition, metabolism and body temperature. The qualities of Pitta are hot, sour, pungent, sharp and acidic. Pitta people have strong digestion. Their build is athletic. When Pittas are in balance, they are intelligent, cerebral and sharp. When out of balance, they are hot and easily angered. Pittas tend toward rashes.⠀ *⠀ Kapha which is the flesh body or the mucus body and is made up of the elements earth and water. Kapha is our bones, muscles, teeth and everything dense in our bodies. The qualities of Kapha are slow, steady, heavy, oily, and cold. When Kapha people are in balance, kapha people are loving, nurturing and grounded. When out of balance, they are needy, melancholy and heavy in body and mind.⠀ *⠀ Our constitution ⠀ Just like we contain all of the elements, we all contain Vata, Pitta and Kapha as well but in varying degrees. Our dosha is determined at the time of conception. This is our constitution or our Prakriti which we are born with and it never varies. Most people are dominant in two of the doshas. It is more rare to be tridoshic, to have equal amounts of all three doshas.⠀ *⠀ Our condition⠀ Vikriti is our condition. Depending on where we live and our lifestyle, our condition can get out of balance. Once we know our condition (Vikriti) we use food, herbs, diet and lifestyle changes to align our condition with our constitution and when they are aligned, we experience optimal health and peace in life. ⠀ Reference- ⠀ www.mindbodygreen.com/wc-jean-koemer⠀ renowned teacher of ISHTA Yoga (Integrated sciences of Hatha, Tantra and Ayurveda) for 20 yrs.

*
Vishnu is ideal to be added to meals during these times or spinkling Vishnu on top as an alternative option. Having 1/2 tsp with warm water 1/2 hour after lunch or dinner or any time throughout the day will bring you peace of mind and cool the body temperature down.

Ganesha Seasoning Mix is perfect to be added to meals to calm & pacify your stomach when you are feeling nevousness, worried, fear, anxiety, cold & your meals have become irregular.
*
According to Ayurveda one of the 3 Doshas – Vata is elevated by cold. Cold weather, wind & rain and food. Cold weather dries you out, hands, lips and overall dry skin. Same as if you leave food in the freezer too long it dries out.
Cold is cooling and drying, so all cold things elevate Vata.
Vata needs cooked food, moderately warming spices, soups, hot beverages, and warming foods like meat. Vata should avoid salads in winter, even salads in general.
*
Using our Ganesha Seasoning mix mixed through your meals, sprinkling Ganesha on top or alternatively mixing 1/2 tsp with 1/2 cup warm water 1/2 hour after lunch or dinner is ideal for pacifying & warming your body!

Use our Durga Mix…are you feeling slow, sluggish, lethargic?

Durga is an ideal seasoning for this chilly Winter weather to warm your insides! 🙂
Perfect to be added to meals to stimulate your tastes and stomach when you are feeling slow and sluggish or lethargic.
While you can’t control the weather, you can control these factors, which either build your health, vitality, and resistance to disease, or wear you down.
Ayurvedically speaking, colds are a kapha-vata disorder. The body builds up an excess of cool and moist kapha qualities, resulting in congestion and a runny nose, and at the same time it may suffer from excess vata, which reduces agni (appetite), leading to chills, loss of appetite, and poor digestion.
*
When you are feeling this way adding heated spices in your meal will warm you up, increase circulation and digestion.
*
Adding our Durga Seasoning Mix to your meals – mixing a portion through or sprinkling on top will enhance the above.
Alternatively mix 1/2 tsp with 1/2 cup warm water 1/2 hour before lunch and dinner will stimulate the body so you don’t lead to feeling slow and sluggish after the meal.

Why Organic?

WHY ORGANIC?⠀
In order to label any products as organic, at least 95% of the ingredients must originate from organically produced plants. ⠀
*⠀
Organic farming practices are designed to encourage soil and water conservation and reduce pollution. To achieve this, farmers use crop rotation, mulch to manage weeds and natural fertilisers to feed plants and soil such as compost and manure. ⠀
*⠀
Consequently, our organic herbs and spices are produced on farms around the world adhering to these practices.⠀
Such farming methods are of great benefit both environmentally and to the health of consumers. When growing organic herbs and organic spices using these practices, the soil is far richer in nutrients and therefore more fertile. This in turn results in stronger, healthier plants free of non-organic matter. Crop rotation and the encouragement of wildlife helps to control and break the cycle of any pests or diseases hence the need to use pesticides is eradicated.⠀
*⠀
When we source our organic herbs and organic spices, we ensure that they are traced back to the farm where they are grown. ⠀
*⠀
Part of their inspection is checking the origin of our organic products and tracing the supply chain from the farms,⠀
This allows us to display their highly respected and distinctive logo upon our packs of organic Seasoning Mixes.⠀
*⠀
Why is organic food often more expensive?⠀
Organic food is more labor intensive since the farmers do not use pesticides, chemical fertilizers, or drugs. Organic certification is expensive and organic feed for animals can cost twice as much. Organic farms tend to be smaller than conventional farms, which means fixed costs and overhead must be distributed across smaller produce volumes without government subsidies.⠀

Organic vs. Non-Organic⠀

Grown with natural fertilizers (manure, compost).⠀
or⠀
Grown with synthetic or chemical fertilizers.⠀
*⠀
Weeds are controlled naturally (crop rotation, hand weeding, mulching, and tilling).⠀
or⠀
Weeds are controlled with chemical herbicides.⠀
*⠀
Pests are controlled using natural methods (birds, insects, traps) and naturally-derived pesticides.⠀
or⠀
Pests are controlled with synthetic pesticides.⠀
